Johor

Arrived: 6th April 2017, 1500hours

We took some time to complete packing our bags and also last minute banking to ensure our bank cards from different banks were working fine. We had also purchased the insurance for the countries we were visiting for a year. It was more economical that way as I would presume that I would be traveling frequently this whole year. We had a backup bank card in case one did not work, we had a special place to keep some money for an emergency. We also exchange some Thai Baht and American dollars, as we know that American dollars were sought after in many developing countries, such as Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It would come in handy when we ran out of the countries currency. It was a good storage medium and exchanging medium. We always keep smaller change in different pockets so that we would not lose our wallet during payment or snap away by a thief. We would keep our important document in front of our body.
We always need alternatives and backed up plan, other than having a mobile we had a small tablet that could be used as a mobile and we also brought along a computer each with us.

Getting from Singapore to Johor was easy. We chose to get a taxis instead of buses as it was more efficient and cost about the same for two persons. For the train tickets, it was cheaper to purchase from Johor Bahru just after the immigration checkpoint. It would cost three times more if we had purchased the train ticket to Gemas in Singapore. The plan was to also spend a day in Johor, photographing the old town and enjoying the Malaysian food and visit some newly sprung up novelty cafes and restaurants. It would serve as a good start for the trip and also allow us to do last minute sourcing for any items that we had missed out.

It took us less than an hour to cross the causeway and we visited our favorite restaurant at the City Square Mall just after the causeway. The lunch was Chinese dishes of stewed pork and vegetables finishing off with some dessert.
It was a pleasant surprise that we met our good friends Shashi and Rum at the mall. They were so excited that we were taking a long trip to Central Asia, a father and son combination, and they insisted to give us a treat for a good start. Sure, we were happy to accept the treat.

We booked into Citrus Hotel along Jalan Station Road, through internet booking, a decent hotel with just the right bare minimum. I would say a three stars hotel.
Along the way to the very special ice cream cafe, we met a lone singer strumming his guitar, struck up some conversation and learnt that he occasionally perform in Singapore too. We posed with him for a shot before continuing the journey to the ice cream cafe.

The happy lady was frequently seen selling flowers by the roadside. Here seat was a sheet of tethered corrugated cardboard, but nothing could prevent her from smiling at my camera. Thanks! Nice.
He was inquisitive and came out to take a look, I said smile, but he was a really stern person. No smile came his way.

Barbershop always intrigues me, especially those with the unique chairs from the seventies. Though the chair had not changed much, his tools had advanced. Now he used electric shaver and cutter. They are more efficient and less intruding. I love the huge mirror, minimalistic and every corner, and every strain of hair was reflected clearly.

Now everyone likes to be photographed, here is one lady waving a no sign at me. She later relented and perhaps was happy to be photographed. Anyway, how many people can appreciate her work and want to document her life?

We had our dinner at the It Roo Cafe Famous Chicken Chop, nothing that fantastic. The seats were arranged very tightly to pack in more tables. It was rather crowded as it passed seven o’clock in the night.

It was time to test the Insta360 Air. I walked into the sea of pigeons and they flew up into the sky generating an immense air current that flutters my hair and beard. I had to hold my breath to keep out the dust and feathers. Pigeons' shit is toxic and frequent exposure to their vapor can cause brain damage. It was a concern in Singapore during the developing years where pigeon set up their nest outside the windows of congested shophouses.

The old town of Johor was also master planned and conserved with a pedestrian mall and the canal clean up, landscaped to beautify and rejuvenate the town. Fancy and novelty cafe sprung up along India temple and along

We had some nice deserts at Hui Lait Shan (楚留山) after lunch after we had signed out from the Citrus Hotel. It was not an easy walk from the hotel to the City Square Mall dragging the bag through staircases, potholes and heavy traffic. Definitely, not a place for the handicapped.

A series of Photos taken on the 6th of April 2017. It is the first stop outside of Singapore, in Malaysia. Johor is a place I go often to visit the shopping for my clothes and educational compact disc. Holiday Inn and Hilton Hotel were my usual haunts.
